I am reminded of the ancient European traditions around midsummer - the fertility rites, the celebrations of life and love and sex, the long days and short nights. Shakespeare understood this in his Midsummer Night's Dream, a celebration of life unleashed. So does Anthony Burgess in his novel The Eve of St. Venus, Bergman in his film Smiles of a Summer Night (remade as a musical by Sondheim with A Little Night Music). All are about life triumphing over that which kills life - indeed, even Strindberg's Miss Julie is about two characters who tragically separate themselves from the joyous celebration that surrounds them in the Swedish midsummer. We must always remember to join the revelers, not to isolate ourselves from the vital, the living, the playful, the dance of hearts.

hi heather, altruistic intimacy implies being in relation without the emotional need for anything in return... to be intimate in this way, we give it from the pure place of no expectation of reward. the nourishment is in giving freely of itself. i touch on this concept in the post titled eros heals, perhaps I will write more on it at a later time, thanks for your comment and question, cm

Love what you wrote, very inspiring... Regarding your recent post (The Heart of Summer) could you explain what you mean by altruistic intimacy?

Thanks and looking forward to reading more in the future!

Your six words of summertime have been lost on me the last couple weeks. But reading your post reminds me of what this time of year represents and that joy has since been reclaimed.

Thank you.

Hello Derek,
Thank you for your comment. I too feel that it has taught me so much, continues to teach me and is invaluable in how I approach and handle all activities. One thing that I like to share with others about meditation is that it has brought into my life the capacity to live in peace even while experiencing pain.
Best regards,
and happy 4th to you,
cara

Hi Cara,

Yours is an interesting story of how to came to connect with Zen, not unsimilar to mine. (I was a musician). I went into hypnotherapy back in the 70s. Then Zen practice (zazen) made a huge impression on my therapy practice. Back and shoulder pain resulting from injuries have been with me for years. I feel that it's taught me a lot!

Best regards,
Derek
