This taps an ancient wisdom and reminds me of a piece of inspirational prose that has been one of the greatest influences on my own spiritual life. Is is from the poet Rilke's passage - from a letter, as I understand it - that is usually known as "The Dragon Princess":

"We are set down in life as in the element to which we best correspond, and over and above this we have through thousands of years of accommodation become so like this life, that when we hold still we are, through a happy mimicry, scarcely to be distinguished from all that surrounds us. We have no reason to mistrust our world, for it is not against us. Has it terrors, they are our terrors; has it abysses, those abysses belong to us; are dangers at hand, we must try to love them. And if only we arrange our life according to that principle which counsels us that we must always hold to the difficult, then that which now still seems to us the most alien will become what we most trust and find most faithful. How should we be able to forget those ancient myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us."

I am reminded of the ancient European traditions around midsummer - the fertility rites, the celebrations of life and love and sex, the long days and short nights. Shakespeare understood this in his Midsummer Night's Dream, a celebration of life unleashed. So does Anthony Burgess in his novel The Eve of St. Venus, Bergman in his film Smiles of a Summer Night (remade as a musical by Sondheim with A Little Night Music). All are about life triumphing over that which kills life - indeed, even Strindberg's Miss Julie is about two characters who tragically separate themselves from the joyous celebration that surrounds them in the Swedish midsummer. We must always remember to join the revelers, not to isolate ourselves from the vital, the living, the playful, the dance of hearts.

hi heather, altruistic intimacy implies being in relation without the emotional need for anything in return... to be intimate in this way, we give it from the pure place of no expectation of reward. the nourishment is in giving freely of itself. i touch on this concept in the post titled eros heals, perhaps I will write more on it at a later time, thanks for your comment and question, cm
